About us and what we can do for you

There’s not much to choose between many of the companies in the world of fragrance. It’s the subtle differences that count. For example, the technologies we use to achieve the exceptional purity of our products; the creativity that goes into our new perfumes; the expertise we dedicate to promoting our own success and yours.

Düllberg Konzentra

What does it take to create the perfect scent? Creativity, experience, expertise and purest raw materials of the highest quality.

These have been our defining attributes for over 85 years. We produce and refine essential oils and perfume compositions for customers in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food and chemical/technical industries. We supply specialities, customised products and tried and trusted standards. Cutting-edge technologies and sophisticated processes, trend studies, market research and our employees’ inspiration all play a big role in ensuring the exceptional quality of the products we manufacture.

With our global network and sites in Hamburg and Dubai, we are always close to our customers and our raw materials.

One family, three generations, 70 years: Düllberg Konzentra is a company with a long and eventful history.

The Hermann Düllberg company is founded and commences trading and the processing of essential oils and fragrances at its registered offices in Kapellenstrasse in the Billstedt district of Hamburg.

Merger with Konzentra Hubert Timm (established in 1933) and move to the latter’s production site in Alsterdorfer Strasse. With larger premises now at its disposal, the company can increase production to include a variety of aromatic chemicals, including geraniol, linalool, citronellal, eugenol, rose acetate, styrolyl acetate and citral. With a large distillation unit now also available, the company can adapt and purify natural products to meet required standards of quality and thus to ensure consistent quality in all grades. The production of menthol is also introduced on site. The menthol production unit along with the relevant know-how is later sold to India, where it gives rise to a flourishing Indian menthol production industry. The company continues to work with commercial partners around the world in expanding its global distribution network.

1983 / 1984
Hermann Düllberg continues to flourish, the business grows, the number of employees increases and in the mid-1980s, a new administration and production complex is built in Obenhauptstrasse. Workflows are significantly improved following the move to the new site.

Hermann Düllberg changes its name to Düllberg Konzentra GmbH & Co. KG.
The distillation centre is again extended and the indoor storage area greatly enlarged – to its present more than 5000m2. Over 2000 raw materials from all over the world are stored here, ready for processing on demand. The same year, the company optimises its analytic equipment, extends its creative centre and begins to conduct market research on a global scale, all of which contribute to its top level of expertise. Automatic dosing systems now facilitate the regular manufacturing process and sample production.

In a pilot project conducted with Mettler Toledo, state-of-the-art weighing technology equipped with radio-controlled data transmission is introduced into all production processes. Now stock transfers of multiple packages can be initiated via monitor and keypad with the aid of portable radio barcode scanners. This key advance in quality management ensures full batch traceability and improves material flows and internal data communication.

Düllberg Konzentra sets its sights on the future – and becomes the industry’s technological leader by investing the largest sum in the company’s history in the reorganisation of all internal production and quality management processes. The installation of further automatic dosing systems brings the level of automation at Düllberg Konzentra to 85%, making it a global leader. Indeed the company still has one of the most cutting-edge production systems in the industry, resulting in maximum dosing accuracy and consistent quality.

As a further step in the project, a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) team is set up to ensure the product quality and documentation required for the manufacture and processing of medicaments, active agents and medical products.

Düllberg Konzentra GmbH & Co. KG FZCO is established in Dubai.
In response to the great demand for our products in the Near East, Düllberg Konzentra sets up its own distribution company in Dubai. Its geographical proximity to customers in the region is a great advantage since it enables the company to adapt perfectly to local requirements and to respond in the shortest possible time to individual customer demands.

We promise you top quality and maximum precision. How do we keep our promise? With an 85% degree of automation and one of the most advanced production plants in the industry.

Having our own distillation and rectification units allows us to standardise the physical and chemical properties of our essential oils and raw materials, leaving us unaffected by natural fluctuations in the quality of raw materials. What’s more, our fully automated blending systems ensure absolute precision in all of our dosing processes.

We have space: enough, in fact, for 2000 essential oils and fragrances. With these, we can immediately supply the products necessary even for complex requirements. Our warehouse is compartmentalised and we always produce on a batch basis, both of which guarantee full traceability at every point along our products’ supply chain.

Our quality management system, introduced in 1997, is based on ISO 9001, GMP and the recognised quality management processes of the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Essential oils are our profession and our passion. We have been producing and refining essential oils for decades. Our state-of-the-art distillation units are the heart and soul of our enterprise.

Natural products call for a special measure of responsibility and sensitivity. We meet these requirements by using gentle separation methods to purify the essential oils and standardise their physical and chemical properties.

That way, we maintain our independence and keep our customers satisfied, too. We prevent natural fluctuations; you can rely on always receiving the same high standard of quality.

Ours is a global business. So wherever in the world you are, we are there for you.

Our local depots around the globe guarantee short delivery times and the first-class quality of our products.

Need some assistance with distribution and logistics? Our partners will be happy to advise you.

Award-winning business processes

Düllberg Konzentra wins the
Process Solutions Award 2013

Hamburg/Germany, June 2013 – The fragrance manufacturer Düllberg Konzentra has been awarded first place in the Process Solutions Awards by the Gesellschaft für Organisation e.V. (gfo). Together with intellivate GmbH and their workflow and business process management suite IYOPRO, Düllberg Konzentra won the Process Solutions Award 2013 in the category “Process-Oriented Solutions ". This award is presented annually by the gfo to business process management projects that set new benchmarks in terms of innovation and measureable benefits. Every year, an independent jury comprising experts for business process modelling and optimisation, including the respected GPM specialist Professor Dr.-Ing. H. Binner and Professor Dr. T. Allweyer, recognises the best process-oriented projects implemented by German companies.  The 2013 awards ceremony took place in Frankfurt at the Process Solutions Day, which is organised annually by gfo and is the biggest specialist conference for BPM software solutions in the German-speaking region.

Düllberg Konzentra and intellivate GmbH submitted a BPM project implemented on the basis of the online BPM suite IYOPRO. The jury was won over by the approach and implementation of this project, which facilitated “a process-oriented selection process, the evaluation of several industry-specific ERP tools and the process and solution-oriented introduction of a selected tool”. The implementation of the ERP selection process, the evaluation and introduction are process-oriented and follow the PRINCE2 project management method. Particular attention is paid to industry-specific implementation of the operative business processes within the ERP software. The latter are highly specific and complex, as the processes used at Düllberg Konzentra include processes used in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food industries.

This highly process-oriented selection process enabled Düllberg Konzentra to evaluate and select ERP software that met the company’s specific needs. The system that was selected is the SAP Group’s ERP system based on the industry template myTDS.Process and implemented by the IT service company TDS. With the aid of this new system, Düllberg Konzentra will be able to secure continued growth, protect company expertise and maintain independence from external consultants. Düllberg Konzentra beat off strong competition, including the Fresenius Medical Group, to win the award. “The jury praised our approach for being outstandingly innovative and future-oriented”, said Martin Gottwald, CFO of Düllberg Konzentra. “We were able to score points with the scope of the existing process models, their detail and the specifications that these models allowed us to make for the new ERP system.”

Innovative fragrances in natural cosmetics

Interview with Alexandre Illan, COSSMA 03/2013

The market for natural cosmetics has changed repidly over the last few years. The ecological niche market has advanced into the mainstream. Alongside the ingredients in the product there is now a need to attract the consumer with textures and packaging. By using the right fragrance the producers can clearly differentiate themselves from the competition, and at the same time effectively carry the message of the positive attributes of the natural ingredients. In an interview with the perfumer Alexandre Illan from Düllberg Konzentra, we learn about consumer demands, trends an the particular feeling of happiness that comes with using natural fragrances.

As a perfumer do you find it defficult to avoid the use of synthetic ingredients?

Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: Limiting oneself to pure, natural raw materials is in fact a major challenge for perfumers. Natural essential oils are often very expensive, so we can use only small amounts in our formulations. A kilogram of genuine rose oil costs almost 6,000 Euros. A kilogram of synthetic rose oil can be obtained for a fraction of this price. Other popular fragrance notes, such as jasmine and tuberose, also command a high price. In our formulations we have to limit ourselves to a smaller amount of ingredients and come straight to the point. For a lavender note, for example, the solution may be to use just ten components instead of 25.

Do you use other natural ingredients as well as in addition to the essential oils?

Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: In addition to a wide range of essential oils we also use individual ingredients that are obtained from natural raw materials. Because there is, for instance, no essential oil from peaches or apricots we have to create the fragrance using other natural aromas ingredients. These materials often have a fruity character and can be reminiscent of the green leaves of rhubarb, while others have a nutty/waxy character and smell like coconut cream. We can use all of these natural fragrances as traces or as so-called “overdoses”, depending on the desired effect.

A lot of consumers find essential oils too intense. How do you find the right balance?
Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: Natural essential oils are pure, highly concentrated substances that should only be used in small amounts, for example dissolved in avocado or almond oil at a proportion of 1:15. In our compositions we combine the individual ingredients in a carefully selected proportion to obtain the right balance and the best profile for the oil.

Which classic fragrances are most frequently used when perfuming natural cosmetics?
Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: Base accords with citrus are always successful because they are fresh, clear and uncomplicated. The concept of aroma therapy is also popular, with combinations such as lavender ylang patchouli, cardamom cinnamon, limette ginger or orange vanilla. People generally prefer fragrances that they know, that they can recognise, and that they can clearly identify such as mandarin, apple or rose. This preference is expressed in our Solinotes portfolio. These are simple accords consisting of five or six essential oils. But we also cater for those requesting complex fragrances based on fine perfumery fragrances or inspired by classic accords such as chypre, amber or fougère.

Which new trends are you noticing in the fragrancing of natural cosmetics?

Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: 2013 is the year of red fruits, like pomegranate, cherry, plum or red currant. Trends also cover exotic fruits such as oriental figs, star fruit and mango. We are also noticing a preference for transparent, green, floral notes like lily, lime blossom, honeysuckle or lotus. Marine, aquatic notes are also gaining popularity for natural cosmetics.

Are genuine marine raw materials used for the aquatic notes?

Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: For the salty, seaweed note we in fact use a seaweed absolute. For a clean, green/watery accord we use, for example, an extract from the peel of the watermelon.

How important are organically produced fragrances for you company?
Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: We are ECOCERT certified and have a wide range of organically grown and produced essential oils. We are constantly expanding our portfolio to meet the increasing demand for such products.

Essential oils are also used therapeutically because of their wide-ranging action on the mind and the body. How important is this aspect in your fragrance creations?

Alexandre Illan, Düllberg Konzentra: Whether we are talking about flowers, leaves, roots, resins or woods, all natural ingredients consist of thousands of substances which can influence our body, and our moods. For me essential oils have an almost magical quality with just one droplet able to make us feel happy, sensual, alive or relaxed. When I smell lavender oil I feel snug and secure because the fragrance reminds me of the time that I spent with my family in the south of France.
Depending on the dosage each formulation can have a very light or an intense effect. A lavender bouquet becomes stronger and more aromatic with rosemary or sage oil. Vanilla or benzoin on the other hand make the lavender fragrance sweeter and softer so that it moves more towards an oriental fragrance. A woody fragrance is made more crisp and bright with citrus notes. It lets the fragrance glow and gives it more complexity. Finally it is all a matter of one thing – the harmony of the fragrance.

Embracing the Future with a New „Scent Profile“

Interview with Christian Düllberg, SOFW Journal, 12/2012

Designing new, creative fragrances is all part of day-to-day business for Düllberg Konzentra. SOFW spoke to managing director Christian Düllberg about current developments, quality standards and visions.

Mr. Düllberg, you have just unveiled a new design for your image brochure and website with a look that is clearer, more elegant, more succinct. What brought about this change?

Ch. Düllberg: It was time to show a modern face, one which immediately signals to our customers just what it is that makes us unique. We develop creative, inspiring fragrances and are renowned for our high degree of automation and our absolute commitment to precision and quality. Our new visual language aims to communicate exactly this balance: we give our customer sufficient space for visions – and we possess the technological expertise to make these visions a reality.

What are you currently working on?
Ch. Düllberg: At the SEPAWA Congress this year, we presented fabric conditioner fragrances that use fine perfumery as their point of reference – an emerging trend across the entire Home Care and Personal Care segment. Discount supermarkets, in particular, are increasingly using high-quality scents in their own-label products. We also presented special perfume oils for household products under the name EU-Ecolabel.
What distinguishes you from other fragrance manufacturers on the market?
Ch. Düllberg: Since Düllberg Konzentra was founded we have attached the utmost importance to the purity and quality of our products. We choose the companies, we source our ingredients from with the utmost care and we inspect all raw materials using ultra-sensitive analysis methods. Our distillation unit is one of the most advanced in the industry, allowing us to filter essential oils as gently as possible and standardize our products. We are in a position to supply our customers with precisely the required quality for any conceivable application. Our degree of process automation also helps us to achieve the very highest precision: with 85%, we are pioneers in our industry.

You also produce essential oils for the pharmaceuticals industry…
Ch. Düllberg: Yes, essential oils are a widely used ingredient in capsules, cough syrups, medical baths or rubs. Pharmaceutical manufacturers have to comply with very strict requirements. Within Germany, we are a key supplier of essential oils produced in compliance with the EU GMP standards and the European Pharmacopoeia – and that applies to a large proportion of our portfolio. We are able to achieve these high standards with our dedicated GMP production room and the stringent hygiene and safety standards that are in place throughout the factory.

You work with customers worldwide. Which are your most important markets?
Ch. Düllberg: At present, we are expanding strongly in the Middle East, where we already generate a significant proportion of our turnover; sales in the region are growing annually by more than 10%. In response to this development we opened a subsidiary in Dubai in 2008. Fragrances »Made in Germany« command a high degree of trust there because our customers know they can depend on receiving outstanding quality and good value for money. The region is also very attractive for our perfumers as consumers are far more courageous in their fragrance tastes and are more prepared to experiment than in Europe or the US. For example, we combine classic French scents with typical Oriental notes such as oud or saffron; in Western countries fragrances such as these would only stand a chance as niche products. India is also a very interesting market for us. Recently, we were the first German fragrance manufacturer to exhibit at the Beauty & Spa Expo in New Delhi and were able to establish numerous very promising contacts.
And what are your current projects in this region?
Ch. Düllberg: For the Arab market we are presently developing so-called »Solid Fragrances«, which are crystallised perfume oils that become so firm that they can be rubbed straight on the skin, akin to a deodorant crystal. Perfume products like these are very popular in the Arab region, and the response we received at this year’s Beautyworld in Dubai was very positive. As soon as we have developed the ideal application form, we will be launching this innovative product on the market there. The company started out 70 years ago by processing essential oils.

How important is this segment for you today?
Ch. Düllberg: Essential oils remain the core of our product portfolio; they are responsible for a large proportion of our turnover. We have 2,800 different essential oils and scents always in stock. We have been seeing an increase in demand from the developing countries, because many of the oral care or wellness products that have been on the market in Europe for a long, long time are only just starting to become popular in these countries. In Europe we are seeing a rising demand for organically-produced essential oils. As we received ECOCERT certification a number of years ago, we are in a position to guarantee our customers high quality products in this segment. Our Natura concept, which comprises perfume compositions on the basis of essential oils in their natural state, is also performing very well.

Where do you see Düllberg Konzentra being in 10 years?
Ch. Düllberg: We want to continue along the path that has made us so successful in the industry for the past 70 years, and we aim to continue to expand our technical expertise and our creative team of international perfumers. Our long-term goal is definitely to take up one of the top positions in the highest league of European fragrance manufacturers

A conversation with Guido Kaiser

Interview published in Euro Cosmetics, issue 12/2012

You create fragrances. What are the key ingredients you need to do this?
Guido Kaiser: The main thing we need is an unerring instinct for the needs of our customers. And then, of course, the very best, top quality, raw materials and creative perfumers with international experience. Finally, the passion our employees have for our products is essential, as is having the most advanced analytics, state-of-the-art production techniques and seamless quality controls.

How do you decide which fragrances to offer your customers?
Guido Kaiser: Often, the specifi cations we are given in the customer’s briefing define the framework for a fragrance. Working from this basis, we formulate matching fragrance profiles. The requirements are often highly complex: the fragrance has to comply with the latest trends, it must be a good match for the target group’s tastes and fulfil specific national preferences. We also have to ensure that the product complies with customer restrictions, such as not using particular ingredients, and that it is technically stable. Naturally, we proactively observe trends and markets, and based on these fi ndings we offer our customers new fragrance concepts and ideas. For instance, under the name Natura we specifi cally develop and market natural fragrance compositions, which have been exceptionally well received by our customers.

Essential oils play an important role. What are the most important raw materials for you?
Guido Kaiser: The sheer variety of different essential oils makes them so indispensable for our fragrance creations. Depending on how we use them in the composition of perfume oils, they can play a leading or supporting role for the character, the performance and the profi le of the creation. In oral care, which is a hugely important business segment for us, we use a slightly narrower range of oils. Peppermint oil, menthol and eucalyptus are vital to create the flavours our customers want and fulfi l consumers’ expectations with regard to freshness and cleanness.

Fragrance compositions play an important role, too. Do you have special “noses” in your company, or do you leave this side of things to the perfumers?
Guido Kaiser: The creative development of fragrance compositions is the task of the perfumers. Seven perfumers from five nations work for our company. Equally important are our evaluators, whose job it is to assess and select the fragrances with regard to their specific application, as well as our sales experts, who are familiar with all our customers’ preferences. We also include consumers in the fragrance development process by asking them to test new fragrances in internal and external consumer panels. Naturally, it goes without saying that our fragrances have to hold their own in a comparison with benchmark scents.

Analytics are the linchpin of your company. Could you explain this in more detail for our readers?
Guido Kaiser: Yes, that’s quite right: analytics are a crucial element in our quality control processes, both for raw materials and our own products. With the aid of enantioselective gas chromatography we can analyse both individual fragrances and fragrance blends very precisely and detect the presence of even the minutest quantities of all the substances in the fragrance. This allows us to ensure consistent quality standards for our products and enables us to reproduce them with absolute precision, both of which are very important factors in establishing and maintaining a bond of trust with our customers.

Creativity plays a major role in your work. It takes several different factors to successfully establish a new product. Can you tell us which these are?
Guido Kaiser: Well, fi rstly and most importantly, the new product has to be inspirational and spark desire. To do this, it must refl ect current trends perfectly and support our customers’ innovation processes. This means that we always have to be ahead of our time in the development of a fragrance, a process that can take several months. In order to “predict” new trends we seek inspiration in music or fashion, for example. We also closely observe other trend-driven sectors, such as the food industry.

Everyone’s talking about natural cosmetics right now. Where do you see this trend going in the future?
Guido Kaiser: Quite some time ago we started intensely focusing on the development of natural perfume oils. Natural cosmetics are still very much at the beginning of their development, but I believe that in the next few years this segment will become more and more important and fi rmly establish itself on store shelves – initially mainly on the European market, but soon also globally. With our Natura range Düllberg Konzentra is one of the leading suppliers of all-natural perfume compositions. The range includes a wide choice of different fragrance profiles, and we are continually creating new compositions in order to meet the strong growth in demand.

Customers demand exceptional purity and quality. How do you ensure that your products meet these requirements?
Guido Kaiser: We have a very stringent quality management system and seamless quality controls. As a GMP-certifi ed company we bear a considerable responsibility, which we take very seriously. We have direct access to the origins of our raw materials and we define the quality standards for the materials we use ourselves. The path of every product – from the raw material supplier to the customer – is 100% traceable in our company. We work only with carefully selected suppliers whom we regularly audit. We operate our own distillation and rectification plants, which enables us to fine-tune the physical and chemical properties of our essential oils and raw materials to balance any natural variations and ensure a consistently high quality standard.

Your company is an established, medium-sized enterprise which operates internationally. Where do you see further development potential?
Guido Kaiser: Our markets are highly dynamic and innovation is one of the most crucial conditions, both for our customers and for us to ensure that our company continues to thrive in a highly competitive market. At the same time, this also creates great opportunities. We aim to open up new markets, gain new customers and expand our existing business. In all we do, our actions are guided by prudence and we take care to use our resources purposefully and systematically. In addition to our core European market, our business is currently developing exceptionally well in the Middle East, where we opened a subsidiary in Dubai in 2008. We intend to grow here and expand our area of operation. India and Africa are also very exciting markets for us; they offer a vast potential and we intend to continue to invest and expand our organisation here.

Natural ingredients for perfume manufacturing are becoming scare, have been prohibited or can no longer be used due to species protection regulations. Do you believe that the art of perfumery can still fl ourish despite these restrictions?
Guido Kaiser: Naturally. Because we use natural products we bear a very great responsibility for our environment and for future generations. Sustainability and “responsiblecare” take top priority for us. Happily, many restricted ingredients can usually be replaced with acceptable substitutes. The industry stopped using ingredients that come from animal sources a long time ago – and nobody misses them. Research is constantly fi nding new and better alternatives. Often, creativity is even enriched through these new ingredients.

EURO COSMETICS: Thank you for this interview.

Düllberg Konzentra produces GMP-quality essential oils

Hamburg, October 2012 – Essential oils are a widely used ingredient in capsules, rubs and medicinal bath additives, etc. One of the main challenges facing manufacturers of pharmaceutical products is sourcing GMP-quality essential oils. For oils from non-European countries, in particular, ensuring GMP compliance and full traceability can be a difficult task. Recognizing inferior quality can be practically impossible for manufacturers without access to the necessary analysis methods.
Düllberg Konzentra has closed this supply gap: within Germany the Hamburg-based company is one of only a few manufacturers who can supply essential oils produced in compliance with GMP standards and the European Pharmacopoeia. This applies to all 320 essential oils in the company’s portfolio, for individual oils and for compositions.
These high-quality essential oils are manufactured in-house using special filtering and refining processes in state-of-the-art distillation units. Compliance with GMP guidelines is guaranteed through the use of a dedicated GMP room and the implementation of the highest, most sophisticated hygiene and security measures throughout the entire factory. Düllberg Konzentra has ECOCERT certification and can also supply certified organic essential oils.
